SCC to offer new certificate in Web Design

Although many people have a difficult time keeping up with Internet technology, there’s no reason for area residents to miss out on the information super highway.

A new certification being offered this fall at Somerset Community College can help. The College’s Visual Communication Program and Business and Information Technology Division are working cooperatively to offer a Web Design Certificate. The certification requires 25 hours of college credit (eight classes) focusing on design principles, digital photography, web page development and web animation.

“While all the classes for the certificate will be offered at SCC’s Somerset Campus, most are also available on-line,” said Visual Communication program instructor Stuart Simpson.

The instructor also noted that students gaining the certification have an excellent opportunity to continue at SCC in either the graphic design or business and information technology areas of study.

“Students can continue to work toward other certifications, diplomas or even an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree,” Simpson said. “For those interested in computers and the Internet, or for anyone wanting to learn, this certification offers a great introduction to the technology.”

No previous experience with graphic communication or website design is required.

“While an understanding of computers and web pages can be helpful, classes for this certificate progress from general to specific,” said Instructional Specialist Cindy Burton. “Those who study and put in the effort can earn this certification with little or no previous computer skills.”

Fall classes for the Web Design Certificate begin this August and there is still time to sign up. To join the classes, pick up an Admissions Application at the Admissions Office on SCC’s Somerset Campus or get one on-line at www.somerset.kctcs.edu. Completed applications must be turned in to the Admissions Office.
