SCC presents service awards to long-time employees

Somerset Community College honored employees who had reached significant service milestones during the Fall 2008 Faculty and Staff Professional Development Day held at The Center for Rural Development on Monday, Aug. 11, 2008.

Pam Rush, the Librarian at SCC, was honored for 35 years of service to SCC. Rush began working at SCC July 1, 1972.

Five employees were honored for 30 years of service. Those included Loretta Hansel, who also works at in the SCC Library; Joe Lynch, Biology Professor; Lois Owens, who works in Admissions; Dan Rogers, Biology Professor; and Roger Tate, History Professor and Division Chair in Social Sciences.

25-Year Service Awards were presented to James Meadors, Welding Professor, and Jenny Payne, Medical Assisting Professor.

Three employees were honored for their 20 years of service to SCC. They were: Larry Abbott, the Chief Maintenance and Operations Officer; Tracy Casada, the Dean of Student Affairs; and Glenda Jones, an Administrative Assistant in Academic Affairs.

Seven employees were recognized for 15 years of service. They were: Kippe Burnett, Professor in the Associate Degree Nursing Program; Frank Carothers, Associate Professor of Business; Jerry Copenhaver, Professor in the Cosmetology Program; Paula Guffey, SCC Registrar; Dorothy Phillips, Director of the SCC Clinton Center; Sara Tucker, Conference Center Coordinator; and Ann Zwick, Chief Institutional Advancement Officer.

10-Year Service Awards were presented to Sherry Dick, Facilities Management Specialist; Jim McFeeters, Associate Professor of Information Technology; Alena Morrow, Library Specialist; Bentley Napier, Laurel Campus Maintenance Staff; Chris Phillips, Economics Professor; Lynn Shearer, Associate Professor of English; Gary Sherman, Associate Professor of Biology; David Slavey, Somerset Campus Maintenance Staff; and Jennifer Wilson, Associate Professor in the Practical Nursing Program.

5-Year Service Awards were presented to Cindy Abbott, Administrative Assistant with the Upward Bound Program at the SCC Russell Center; Deane Allen, Administrative Assistant in Academic Affairs; William Bowling, Laurel Campus Maintenance Staff; Melissa Bray, Business Affairs Assistant at the Laurel Campus; Pam Bridgman, Assistant Professor of Information Technology; Eddie Brown, Assistant Professor of Heating and Air Conditioning; Harold Causey, Clinton Center Maintenance and Operations Assistant Supervisor; Larry Chaney, Director of Program Facilitation; Donna Eastham, Assistant Professor in the Early Childhood Education Program; Jeff Harris, Associate Professor of English; Jess Hoskins, Coordinator of the Respiratory Care Program; Mickey LaFavers, Adult Education Specialist; Darrell Lyons, Somerset Campus Maintenance Staff; Trent Pool, Laurel Campus Recruiter; Mike Stewart, Maintenance and Operations Supervisor; Ronald Sumpter, Somerset Campus Maintenance Staff; Steve Tucker, Somerset Campus Maintenance and Operations Assistant Supervisor; and Estel Ray Wesley, Somerset Campus Maintenance Staff.

Five SCC employees were honored with Special Excellence Awards for their contributions to the SCC Cultural Diversity Initiative. They were Lynn Shearer, Sherry Crabtree, George Martinez, Darlene Libbey, and Alyce Grover.

The annual day-long Fall Faculty and Staff Professional Development Day featured keynote speaker, Dr. Maryellen Weimer, author of Learner-Centered Teaching: Five Key Changes to Practice, and Professor Emeritus of Teaching and Learning at Penn State University.

The focus of the event was preparation for the upcoming Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) re-accreditation of SCC, which occurs every ten years. Faculty and staff focused on a new Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) which will emphasize implementing Critical Thinking in teaching and learning at SCC.
