SCC held Commencement Ceremonies May 9 at The Center

Approximately 300 Somerset Community College students walked across the stage and accepted their associate degrees, diplomas or certificates during the Commencement/Graduation Ceremony on Friday, May 9, at the Center for Rural Development in Somerset.

Not all students who applied to graduate plan to participate in the Commencement ceremony. A total of 619 SCC students applied to graduate with a total of 1141 degrees, certificates or diplomas. In all SCC awarded 388 associate degrees, 164 diplomas and 589 certificates at the end of the Spring 2007-2008 Semester.

Students, who planned to graduate at the conclusion of the Summer 2008 Semester, were also permitted to accept their awards during Spring Commencement. Approximately 90 students fall into this category. They earned 45 diplomas, 35 certificates and 10 diplomas.

SCC Physical Therapy Assistant Program Instructor Steve Hammons, the recipient of the 2007 Kentucky Community and Technical College System New Horizons Faculty Award of Excellence, spoke at the ceremony.

Hammons is a native of Knox County and a former SCC student. He holds degrees from the University of Kentucky, including a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences and a Master of Science in Physical Therapy. He obtained his Doctor of Physical Therapy from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia.

Hammons joined the faculty of SCC in 2004. In addition to the New Horizons honor, Hammons had been awarded the National Institute of Staff and Organizational Development Award, the Somerset-Pulaski Chamber of Commerce Professor of the Year Award, and the SCC Distinguished Faculty Member of the Year Award.

In 2007, Hammons was inducted into the registry of the Cambridge Who’s Who Among America’s Healthcare Practitioners and was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel.

SCC students Jeremy W. Jones and Travis Adkins also addressed the audience. Jones is the President of the SCC Student Government Association, while Adkins represented SCC student on the Laurel Campus.

The Southwestern High School Band performed “Pomp and Circumstance” by Elgar.

The Somerset Community Chorus and the Somerset Community College Chorus sang “Ride the Chariot,” “I’d like to Teach the World to Sing,” and “Go in Peace.”

In what has become an SCC tradition, Bagpipers Bart Davidson and Jack Lewis led faculty and students into the auditorium and played the recessional.
